How to Stay Healthy When the Kids Are Sick

Flu season has been really tough this year, especially in our neighborhood. All three of the kids have been sick on and off for the past six weeks. My husband has been traveling and has stayed healthy using a few of the tricks I’m about to share with you. I stayed well for the past year, but it finally got me this season! Isn’t it hard not to get sick when the kids are cuddling up next to you and at the same time sniffling, sneezing and coughing all over us?!


When I feel a little less than 100% I go into attack mode to prevent the spread of germs.


SANITIZE

First, I clean and sanitize the main community areas of the house.

I change out all the towels and give all family members their own hand towel in each bathroom. I wash our throw blankets in our living room. I’ll wash bedding if I have time, but definitely all pillowcases. I wipe down light switches, door knobs, faucet handles and remotes.


NOSE IRRIGATION

This sounds so gross, but in reality, it’s not that bad and it is more important than I ever realized. I know people who haven’t been sick in years and they claim it’s because of this. Grab a spray like this one or this one and pump it into each nostril morning and night. Any bacteria or viruses that have gotten into your nose get flushed out without your body having to do so much work. A must when flying, too!


SUPPLEMENTS.

Zinc is a nutrient that helps boost the immune system and helps to fight off bacteria and viruses. It helps our white blood cells function and is also involved in many cell processes like wound healing, protein and DNA production and cell division. Red meat, chicken, seafood and nuts have zinc but since my kids can be picky eaters, I offer them liquid zinc in their drinks a few times a week and definitely daily when someone in the house is sick.


Probiotics. The immune system starts in your gut and balancing the “good” and “bad” bacteria can impact your health. We take probiotics or get them from our diet, but I make sure to give a capsule of these to all the kids - and myself - when someone in the house feels under the weather.


Elderberry syrup or gummies. I have had mixed results with this, but I’ve heard elderberry boosts the immune system, so we give it a try! You can also drink elderberry tea and luckily my oldest son loves this kind!


DIET

Lots of vegetable and fruits. My kids don’t like a lot of green veggies, so I add green leafy vegetables into smoothies with a half cup of fruit, protein powder or greek yogurt, and I add chia or flax seeds. Since my kids prefer creamy smoothies, I also add half a banana or some vanilla extract to sweeten it up. At least with a smoothie I know they are getting veggies whether or not they actually eat the others I offer at dinner and lunch.


Immunity Boost Drinks. There’s a fantastic juice place by our house that offers an “Immunity Surge” and I go get that for myself. It tastes terrible, so it only works for adults! You can make your own - theirs includes orange, lemon, ginger, oregano oil, cayenne pepper, baobab and turmeric. Tea or water with lemon and ginger are great, too.


BEDTIME RITUALS.

Baths with epsom salts. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium flushes lactic acid out of muscles to help them relax and decreases cortisol to destress the mind, too. It not only helps the body sleep better but also to recover and detoxify while increasing white blood cell counts. Consult a doctor for safe amounts to use with your children. We do about a cup or two for our 4 year old - 7 year old baths and it’s worked well for us.


Essential oils. Frankincense, eucalyptus, tea tree, lemon, clove, rosemary and cinnamon are all great for boosting immunity and fighting germs. We don’t use cinnamon or those blends at bedtime because it tends to invigorate the kids, our favorite before bed when someone is sick is this one because it contains lavender. We diffuse them into the air, rub them on the kids or use our handy roll-ons.

 

Our sick kid gets a special spot on the sofa and blanket all to themself and we throw screen time rules out the window for the first day or two. I try to contain the germs, but I hope that by boosting everyone’s immune system and setting out clean items that are shared that we stay as well as we can. I’m just not one of those people who can stop snuggling with the kids when they need it most!
